Caoimhe – Volunteer at Lewisham Local

I volunteered as a community researcher, I wrote a few stories for Lewisham Local’s website to shine a light on how businesses, community groups and local volunteers were working together in Lewisham to support the community.

Earlier this year, I interviewed a local business owner in Deptford who runs the pub ‘The Birds nest’ to find out what great work they were doing by providing free hot meals to those vulnerable during the pandemic. We also chatted about how they would inspire other business to do something similar. I also visited Lewisham’s Polish Centre, where I spoke to some local volunteers and organisers who had dedicated their time to sorting donations to transport to those in Ukraine. I wrote up these stories and captured pictures of the great work both The Birds Nest and the Polish Centre were doing.

I volunteered as I had moved to Lewisham in early 2020, I had a bit of time off work and wanted to get involved in something in the local community – I feel this is really important. I came across Lewisham Local and really liked the work they were doing, it has been a really enjoyable experience especially as Lewisham being London Borough of Culture this year!
